Aniruddha Roy "Tony" Chowdhury (Bengali: অনিরুদ্ধ রায় চৌধুরী) is a Bengali film director. He is the director and producer of two films: Antaheen and Anuranan.

Early life

As a child Chowdhury watched films like The Sound of Music, Roman Holiday and Haathi Mere Saathi. These films would later inspire him to become a filmmaker.[1]

Career

Chowdhury first worked in film as an ad filmmaker. He has produced ads for Philips, Britannia, and other brands.[2] Chowdhury began shooting in August 2006 for his first film, Anuranan, the first Bengali film to be shot in London. The film premiered at the 2006 International Film Festival of India.[3] It was also screened at the Cannes International Film Festival, the 2007 Mumbai Academy of Moving Images Film Festival, the Bollywood And Beyond Film Festival and the Independent South Asian Film Festival. Anuranan received positive reviews from the critics. Chowdhury received the Aravindan Puraskaram award for best debut director for Anuranan.[4] In 2008, he won the Emerging Film-Maker Award at the Santa Cruz Film Festival for Anuranan.[5] His second film, Antaheen was released in January 2009 and was screened at the 2009 Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival.[6] It went on to win four National Film Awards in 2009, including one for Best Film.[7] He is currently working on Aparajita, his adaptation of Sunil Gangopadhyay's Dui Nari Hate Torobari. The film will star Prasenjit Chatterjee, Padmapriya, Kamalinee, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Kalyan Roy and Soumitra Chatterjee.[8]
